The focus on science was chosen to...
> inspire students to be open, questioning and creative in their learning
> help prepare students to be successful in an increasingly scientific and technological world
> help develop greater understanding of the growing importance of the global and local ecological environmental and ethical impact of science
> build on the rich sources of support from local science expertise, such as the Science Museum and Imperial College London
> complement other specialisms in local secondary schools.
There is a particular emphasis on science across the curriculum and on developing an enrichment programme for those with particular ability in sciences. The "science leaders" programme, which develops student leadership, includes experience of science outside the Academy, problem-solving activities and special projects.
There is also a focus on activities covering the full range of scientific experience. For example: science in sport, medical sciences, science-based technology, the science of environmental issues, and the science of intermediate technology.
