Parents flock to Chelsea Academy Open Evenings
1 October 2008
Parents keen to send their children to the brand new Chelsea Academy turned up in large numbers to two open evenings at Chelsea Old Town Hall (29 and 30 September) where they heard the school's Principal, Andy Yarrow, outline his vision for the school. Mr Yarrow told 820 parents and children that the Chelsea Academy would have a strong Christian ethos and high standards right from the start.
Parents learned that the Academy would have a six-hour day, longer than most schools. All students will be offered the opportunity to participate in activities which develop their wider education skills and understanding. In addition, inspired by the best university models, students will benefit from one-to-one and small group coaching aimed at increasing levels of achievement.
Councillor Merrick Cockell, Leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, said: "Parents in the south of the borough have been waiting for many years for a new secondary school that they could have absolute confidence in sending their children to. I am delighted that after many years of planning we have now reached a stage where real parents are asking questions to the Academy's first Principal and look forward very much to the first set of pupils beginning their education in the Academy next September."
One parent, Mrs Yelverton, who attended the open evening, said: "The Chelsea Academy will be my first choice for my twins, William and Emily. I was very impressed by Andy Yarrow when he visited Marlborough, William and Emily's primary school, and particularly liked the way he spoke to the children."
The Chelsea Academy is a brand new secondary school for boys and girls which will receive its first intake of 162 Year 7 pupils in 2009. The Academy is sponsored by The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the London Diocesan Board for Schools – two organisations with excellent reputations for delivering high quality education for children.
Editors' notes: the school will open in Sept 2009 for 162 pupils in high quality temporary accommodation in Hortensia Road.
The new building will open in Sept 2010 in Lots Road.
Andy Yarrow was previously Principal of Hornsey School for girls, adjudged by Ofsted to be an "outstanding" school under his leadership. |
